Paul Ranslet

My source of inspiration comes from people and animals. Birds, in particular, have captured my interest—their plumage often forms a perfect shape around the body, and the bird’s form often reflects its character.

Alongside my interest in birds, I have modeled small human figures. This continued at the academy, where we worked with life models.

To me, the human body is highly expressive. It can be, for example, a gesture where a hand expresses a thought or feeling, or the twist of the rib cage in relation to the pelvis, which in itself can provide enough content for a sculpture.

I work with clay, wax, and bronze as my preferred materials. Smaller figures are modeled in wax since the material is easier to handle than clay. On the other hand, it is faster to build a larger sculpture in clay, which also leaves a different material expression compared to wax.
